FAQs

  • Q: What is VoiceWake?
  • A: VoiceWake is a windows phone app that uses Wake On LAN technology to turn on your PC using Cortana's voice recognition software.  If you download the full version and the desktop companion app you can also Wake your PC when you arrive at a remembered location, Wake your PC at a specified time, Shutdown, Restart, and Hibernate your PC.

  • Q: When Installing the desktop application windows says "Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting", why?
  • A: Unfortunately, this is a consequence of being an unknown publisher.  For a fee of $100 per year, I can become a known publisher and sign the installer with a certificate, but at that price it's just too much compared to the limited profits I earn from VoiceWake.  I understand if it this is a turnoff for some users, but there isn't anything I can do about it at this time.  If you would like to continue with the installation, click "More Info" and "Run anyway".

  • Q: How Do I configure Wake On LAN?
  • A: To configure Wake On LAN, you must access your computer's BIOS and enable the Wake On LAN setting.  In the windows device manager, you must also enable the "Wake On Magic Packet" setting of your network adapter.  More information about this configuration process can be found here.

  • Q: I can't find a Wake On LAN setting in my computer's BIOS settings.
  • A: The name of this setting can vary, but it is usually located in the Power Management settings under the name "Power On By PCIe" or something similar.

  • Q: I've configured Wake On LAN, but my computer is not waking up.
  • A: This can be any number of things, but first make sure your computer has a static IP and your router is forwarding port 4505 (default VoiceWake port) to that static IP address.  Another thing to try is waking your PC from different power states (Sleep, Hibernate, Shutdown, etc.).  If you are using Windows 8 and are still having trouble, try disabling the S4 sleep state by following this procedure.  You can also try installing the desktop companion application here to double check your PC information, and recommended router configuration.

  • Q: The computer status is displaying as Off and none of the shutdown, restart, or hibernate features work even though the correct ports are forwarded on my local network!
  • A: Unfortunately this seems to be a windows phone 8.1 bug.  If your PC is off and your phone connects to your WiFi network, it sometimes connects using the static IP address that you've assigned to your PC (because this address is available when you're PC is off for an extended period of time).  Thus, when your phone connects to your network, it's using your PC's IP address (causing an ip address conflict).  Since your phone can't connect to this WiFi network using this IP address, it reverts to using the cellular connection to access the internet, making your local PC's IP address inaccessible.  One solution is to reserve your PC's IP address on your router, that way only your PC can use it, but only some routers support this feature.  Another solution is to turn WiFi on/off on your phone to reconnect to the network after your PC is on.

  • Q: Wake on location does not work.
  • A: The wake on location feature is triggered when you connect to a WiFi network.  When you remember a location, VoiceWake remembers your geocoordinates and the name of the WiFi network you are connected to at that current moment.  If you ask Cortana to wake your PC when you arrive at this location, VoiceWake waits until you connect to a WiFi network.  When you connect, it checks your geoposition and the network name, if you are within a certain distance of the geocoordinates and the network name matches what is remembered for this location, then your computer will be woken up.  It may take a minute or so to connect to a WiFi network from a locked state, so your computer may not wake up immediately.  Try unlocking your phone when you arrive to wake your computer faster.

  • Q: VoiceWake doesn't recognize my computer name.
  • A: Your computer's name does not need to match what your PC is named on your home network.  The name is just whatever you want to call this PC when interacting with Cortana.  For this reason, try and give your computers simple names with no numbers, symbols, or dashes.

  • Q: The Desktop companion application says port 4506 is closed and Shutdown, Restart, and Hibernate are not working.
  • A: Make sure you're forwarding the ports recommended by the desktop application in your router configuration, also if you have any firewall software besides Windows Firewall (Norton Antivirus, McAfee, etc.), you must create a rule to allow traffic on port 4506.

  • Q: What voice commands can I use with VoiceWake?
